2nd Welfare & Policy Conference

mai 5 2025 @ 13:00 - mai 6 2025 @ 17:00

We are please to invite submissions to the second edition of the Welfare & Policy Conference organized by the Society for research on Welfare and Policy (WAP) and the research program HOPE at the Bordeaux School of Economics .

In a troubled word, economics (and social sciences more generally) must provide evidence on what determines behaviors regarding life choices (health, work, care, etc.), voting (and shifts towards conservatism, populism or social protests), economic decisions (consumption, saving, etc.) or pro-environmental attitudes; what affects our well-being, health, mental health, emotions, perceptions and preferences; ultimately, what we should know and do to improve public policies for a better world. For this reason, we invite contributions in various domains of economics, quantitative social psychology and political sciences, and in particular on (but not restricted to):

  • How shocks change behavior, trust or values – and consequences for the sustainability of welfare systems
  • Social media, the diffusion and manipulation of information, and life with populism
  • New forms of poverty, adaptation and the limits of resilience
  • Perception of changing inequalities (of income, health, exposure to environmental shocks, etc.) and the relation with well-being, political orientation, social unrest and radicalization
  • Negative emotions and the tradeoff between security, freedom & democratic support
  • Determinants of health, mental health and other well-being dimensions, and the role of health and social systems
  • Labor and nonmarket time uses: post-Covid trends and the role of labor and family policies
  • Perception of global warming, green policies and behavioral changes vs. inertia
  • Normative work on policy/political transformations aimed at promoting peace, democracy and stability
  • The ability of tax-benefit systems to reduce inequality (across people or generations), quickly respond to shocks, or adapt to new inequalities (such as those engendered by climate change or forced migration).

Keynote speakers: Andrea Weber (Central European University, Vienna) & Matthew Sutton(University of Manchester)
